Sun Microsystems Helps Deliver "Anytime, Anywhere Learning"
at the Launch Of School Of 3rd Millennium
IN FRENCH

Smart-card-enabled Sun Ray appliances simplify and improve access to new Francophone education portal

LACHINE, QUE, - September 25, 2001 - Sun Microsystems of Canada Inc. today participated in the official launch of an exciting computing initiative at Collège Sainte-Anne in Lachine, Quebec. The new Francophone education portal was made possible thanks to a new concept involving integration of three technologies: Sun Ray appliances, iPlanet portal software, and ANASAVE, an electronic data backup solution.

At the helm of the project, dubbed School of the 3rd Millennium, is AdherSIS North America, a Sun Authorized iForce Service Provider specializing in electronic data backup. The project represents an investment of more than $1 million in Sun hardware and a portfolio of software from iPlanet E-Commerce Solutions, a Sun-Netscape Alliance.

"The portal represents anytime, anywhere learning," noted Everett Anstey, president, Sun Microsystems of Canada Inc. "Portal computing will simplify the way online resources and services are created, deployed and accessed at Collège Sainte-Anne. It ultimately will provide improved access to web-based resources and a better learning environment for students."

"We are thrilled to be providing students, parents and staff with the customized information and integrated applications they need, in a secure and easy-to-use format," said Roger Gauvin, Director General, Collège Sainte-Anne. "The portal provides students and faculty with immediate access to online information and resources, including e-mail, homework assignments, grades, the most relevant web links for every school subject, Sun's StarOffice productivity software suite, distance learning, library services and a host of other very interesting teaching tools."

Sun Enterprise 420R and 220R servers power the portal, which students and faculty can access from 400 Sun Ray appliances. The Sun Ray appliance, with its Hot Desk Technology, is smart card-enabled and allows any student or teacher to instantaneously access sessions from any Sun Ray appliance on campus by means of their smart card, their password, and the click of a mouse.

iPlanet Directory, Messaging and Calendar software solutions manage the information accessed by the College's 1400 students and teachers. Accessibility to the portal can be tailored to meet the needs of each user.

"Using iPlanet software, our teachers can create virtual educational communities dedicated to a particular subject or class that will assist them in the delivery of their classroom lessons. They can also build educational databases that students can use for their homework assignments," said Gauvin.

While students and faculty benefit from the Sun Ray appliance's user-friendly format and improved access to online resources , the Sun Ray system offers school administrators a less-costly alternative to purchasing individual personal computers. The Sun Ray systems require minimal support, thus freeing up time for technical staff to assist teachers with the development of new programs and applications for the classroom.

AdherSIS North America worked with the Collège Sainte-Anne to design, install and implement the customized network infrastructure that supports the portal's requirements.

"We're very happy to be involved in this groundbreaking project to bring web-based services to the students and faculty of Collège Sainte-Anne," said Pascal Fournier, President, AdherSIS North America. "The College's Francophone portal will offer students access to online tools and information that will help them learn their curriculum while also advancing their computer skills."

The Collège Sainte-Anne web portal will serve as a pilot project for other Francophone schools. Access to the portal is limited to the College's students, parents and faculty through a password-protected identification system. General information on Collège Sainte-Anne is available through its public website at www.college-sainte-anne.qc.ca.
