Super Computing Facility Expands in KingstonScott McNealy, Chairman of Sun Microsystems Delivers Keynote at Opening of High Performance Computing Lab June 15, 2006, Kingston, ON: The largest high performance computing facility in Canada, The High Performance Computing Virtual Laboratory (HPCVL), announced today the opening of its new and expanded central facility in Kingston, Ontario. Sun Microsystems is the largest private sector partner in HPCVL and Scott McNealy Chairman and Founder of Sun Microsystems and Chairman of Sun Federal, Inc, is visiting Kingston today to give the keynote address at the opening of the new facility. The HPCVL Central facility is the largest of its kind in Canada. Sun has made significant contributions to HPCVL to date, which include hardware, software, maintenance, training and network support, through Stantive Solutions, a Sun independant sales organization for Eastern Ontario, based in Kingston. The contributions made to HPCVL are the largest investment by Sun Microsystems in any post-secondary institution in Canada, and one of the largest in the world. Mr. McNealy spoke to a group of about 400 researchers, university administrators, industry and government representatives who were on hand for the opening of the new HPCVL. HPCVL was created in 1998 by a consortium of four Eastern Ontario educational institutions: Queen's University, Carleton University, University of Ottawa and the The Royal Military College of Canada. Ryerson University and Seneca College have since joined the consortium as well. In establishing the laboratory, their objective was to provide a secure high performance-computing environment for innovative research. Since then the facility has grown to become one of the best academic high performance computing facilities in North America. Substantial funding in HPCVL has been provided by The Ontario Research and Development Challenge Fund, the Ontario Innovation Trust, the Canada Foundation for Innovation, the Ontario Research Fund, the Ministry of Research and Innovation and the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada to create, expand and sustain the laboratory. The HPCVL Central facility is essentially a cluster of large, very powerful and fast computers that researchers can use to test and explore concepts that require computational power far beyond what small desktop or deskside computers can provide. "What started as an idea of a small group of people has blossomed into an impressive success story" said Ken Edgecombe, Executive Director of HPCVL. "I am extremely pleased to be a part of the growth and success of HPCVL enabling world-class research in a secure environment. Researchers across Canada are accessing this facility in record numbers and our new facility will continue to support and enhance their important work in a variety of fields"
About HPCVL HPCVL is dedicated to providing researchers at member institutions and selected researchers from elsewhere in Ontario and Canada with the secure High Performance Computing resources they need to conduct innovative research in a broad spectrum of disciplines. www.hpcvl.org About Sun Microsystems of Canada Inc.
