These expert lead sessions provide a wealth of practical experience from the front lines of datacenter virtualization and cloud computing efforts. The Crossbow session will introduce you to new network virtualization efforts between Sun and our partners.

Course Content

Module 1: Virtualization++: From Server Consolidation to Cloud Computing

Instructor: Bernard Golden, HyperStratus

Description: This course covers how virtualization is a fundamental requirement for IT organizations of the future and how it underpins the future of IT infrastructure. It discusses key virtualization technologies, including hypervisor design, network and storage options, and virtual system management. It also discusses how virtualization is being extended to support private and public cloud computing infrastructures, and it examines critical cloud enablers such as orchestration and interoperability.

Module 2: Deploying the OpenSolaris Operating System in Your Datacenter

Instructors: Chris Armes, Ben Rockwood, Nick Solter, Jerry Jelinek

Course Description: This course covers some of the primary tasks in deploying the OpenSolaris operating system in the datacenter, with in-depth discussions and demos on the Solaris ZFS file system in the trenches, high availability with the OpenSolaris OS, and application consolidation with OpenSolaris OS containers. Learn more about the key features of OpenSolaris 2009.06 that help solve problems in your datacenter. Find out who is deploying OpenSolaris today in datacenter environments.

Module 3: Open Networking with Crossbow

Instructors: Jeff Jackson, Sunay Tripathi, Xiaobo Wang, Ben Rockwood, Richard Newman

Description: Crossbow provides building blocks for network virtualization and resource partitioning, by creating virtual stacks around any services or virtual machines such as containers or Xen. These are the building blocks for higher-level services such as cloud computing and are the core foundation behind the Sun Network.com[sm] Connection offering. Each virtual stack can be assigned its own priority and bandwidth on a shared network interface card (NIC) without causing any performance degradation. The architecture dynamically manages priority and bandwidth resources. The virtual stacks are separated by means of a hardware classification engine so that traffic for one stack does not have an impact on other virtual stacks. Project Crossbow is the next step in the evolution of the Solaris operating system (Solaris OS) kernel.

Module 4: Cloud Computing and Storage in Practice

Instructors: Tim Bray, Chris Kutler

Description: This session opens with Cloud Concepts and examples. In the area of Cloud Infrastructure and virtual server images, Tim Bray talks and demos the Sun Cloud Compute API with sample code. Next is a presentation about 2 types of Cloud Storage: file based and object based. This includes an overview, with demos and sample code, of administration and maintenance of files and objects using WebDAV and the Sun Cloud Storage SDK.
